Czech national evening
On Wednesday evening we cooked Czech national food – “Böhmische schnitzel ala Prague” with potatoe salad. For vegetarian we prepared fried cheese with tartar sauce. Everybody liked the food
Afterwards we told our friends something about situation of GLBT people in the Czech Republic.
Here is the short review of presented facts:
Homosexuality is legal since 1961, however till 1990 the age of consent for homosexual intercourse (18) wasn’t the same as for heterosexual people (15).After a longterm effort and some repeated refusals the Czech Parliament finally accepted proposal of Registrated Partnership law which came through and is in practice since 1st July 2006. In the first year of validity more than three hundred pairs used this possibility and closed partnership.Due to the public opinion researches there are more than a half Czech citizens agree with acceptance of the Registrated partnership Law. Around 35 % of Czech public support possibility of G/L adoptions.Main events in GLBT communities include GLBT film festival Mezipatra (Between floors) which take place every autumm in Prague and Brno and lesbian festival eLnadruhou (L-squared).
The only one organization in Czech Republic working with transgender people is TransForum, which has aproximately few decades of members. Transsexual people are allowed to udergo sex reassigment surgery when they are at least 18 years old. Legal starting point for hormonal treatment is a little bit ambigous but in recent years there were first few attempts to start taking hormons from the age of fifteen. There was even one unique case of one young FtM who could start taking hormons when he was 13. In recent years we have noticed few cases where the process of sex change was started during attending secondary school and the huge majority of pupils and theachers accepted the new status quo and those young transgenders did not face any discrimination. The Czech Republic is one of the most developed pioneer-countries on the field of tretment of transsexual people. Sex change is allowed since half of the 60’s. The whole process of sex changing can even be done in 15 months and almost all treatment, including surgeries, is paid from the insurance. (There are only few countries in the world with the same level of treatment and legislative practice).
